My review of ‘Gin no Saji’ and ‘Gin no Saji 2nd Season’

Well, it’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen a storyline that was this compelling, heartwarming, and well-paced.

Gin no Saji is, quite frankly, an EXTREMELY well-done anime. In the areas of character development, atmosphere, humor, and emotional power, this anime knocks it out of the park.

To start, here’s a general synopsis (below):

“Yugo Hachiken dreams of life separated from his family, so he takes the initiative by enrolling in an agriculture school. He thinks, with his talent in studying, no problems will arise no matter what kind of school he attends. He is proven wrong very quickly. Raised as a city boy, he is forced to uncover the inconvenient truth about agricultural life. Enjoy the story of Hachiken, as he tries to keep up with his new friends, farmers’ heirs, who are already accustomed to the harsh world of farming. With no clear goals or understanding of farming life, how will Hachiken survive this new, cruel reality? The story of a sweat, tear, and mud-stained youth begins!”

I’m going to get straight to the point – the main character, Hachiken (the guy above this text), and his endeavors (wether making friends, learning how naive he is, or even just reflecting) are the core of this anime. If he wasn’t as flawed and strong of a character as he is, this anime WOULD NOT work.

Essentially, aside from Hachiken’s growth (which is the most imprtant thing), the other main thread that holds this anime together is its focus on other characters and what they bring to the table (see the foremost picture, all the important ones are in there.)

Everyone has a backstory, a personality, and contributes to the anime. Amazing.

And it should be noted that this anime has great humor to boot. Wether it’s laughing at someone not accustomed to hard work learn to have to do it (and then realizing just how much he is growing as a person becasue of it), or wether it’s an off-the-wall joke (which there are quite a few of), it never gets bogged down by sappiness. It’s ALL character-driven humor: the best kind of humor.

This anime’s got it all: people growing, great humor, romance, heartbreak, realizations, and an ending that feels satisfying.

Watch this, you more than likely will NOT be dissapointed.
